Can You Buy Machu Picchu Tickets on the Day?

Oct 27, 2026 Peru Andes Discovery 9 min read 1 view

Sometimes, but do not plan around it. In June, July and August the answer is effectively no, because we advise booking three months ahead for those months. In the rainy season, slots are easier to find at short notice, but nothing is guaranteed. Huayna Picchu permits are effectively never available last minute, with only 400 a day. Even if you find a slot, you still need a licensed guide and your passport, and the name on your ticket must match it exactly. If Machu Picchu is the reason for your trip, secure it before you fly.

We run tours to Machu Picchu from Cusco every week. For everything else about the visit, read our complete Machu Picchu guide. This article is for the traveller who is already in Peru, or about to be, and wants to know how much risk they are carrying.

The honest answer by season

Availability follows the seasons, and so does the risk of arriving without a ticket.

SeasonMonthsCan you count on a last-minute slot?
High seasonJune to AugustNo. Book three months ahead
Shoulder seasonApril, May, September, OctoberRisky. Slots exist but the best ones go first
Low seasonNovember to MarchEasier at short notice, but not guaranteed

Three dates change that picture:

  • Around Inti Raymi on 24 June, demand is at its highest of the year.
  • Around the national holidays on 28 and 29 July, the end of an already peak month is the tightest.
  • Christmas week lifts demand even in the quiet season.

The dry season is the busy season. Our seasonal data says it brings the best conditions, more people and higher prices. More people means fewer slots left over. The rainy season is quieter, and entry is easier to secure at short notice. For what the quietest months look like, read Machu Picchu in January.

“Easier” is not the same as “available”. We do not publish daily quotas, because we do not have an official figure we can stand behind, and rules change. What we can say is that leaving it to the day is a gamble in any month.

Where last-minute tickets are sold

Tickets are sold through official channels, and the details of those channels change. We confirm the current ones when you book, and we do not quote a route here that may be out of date. For the full process, read how to buy Machu Picchu tickets.

A few facts hold whatever channel you use:

  • Entry is by assigned time. You are buying a slot, not a general admission.
  • Your passport is the key. It is required for the train and for entry. Photocopies are not accepted, and the name on your ticket must match your passport exactly.
  • A licensed guide is mandatory. It has been since 2024. A ticket alone does not get you through the site, so a last-minute ticket also needs a last-minute guide.
  • The site is open from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM. A late slot leaves you with less time inside.

Some travellers try the ticket office in Aguas Calientes on arrival. We would not rely on it. If the slot you want is gone, you will have travelled 3 hours 40 minutes to find out. That is the sum of the 1.5-hour private transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, the 1 hour 40 minute train and the 30-minute bus, before waiting and queues.

What sells out first and what lingers

Not everything sells out at the same speed. As a rule, the scarce items go first.

Goes first:

  • Huayna Picchu permits. Only 400 a day, in two groups.
  • Any slot inside June to August. These are the busiest months of the year.
  • Dates around festivals. Inti Raymi and the late-July holidays are examples.
  • Popular times and circuits. The slots and routes most visitors want tend to go before the others.

Lingers longer:

  • Dates in the rainy season. Fewer people travel, so slots last longer.
  • Less popular times and circuits. If you are flexible about the hour, you have more chance.

That last point is where you can help yourself. If you can accept a different time or a different route, you widen your options. Read which circuit to buy before you decide what you can compromise on.

Huayna Picchu: effectively never available last minute

If the Huayna Picchu hike is part of your plan, treat it as a booking you make months ahead, not a decision you make on the day.

The facts:

  • 400 permits a day, split into two groups.
  • The climb takes 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down.
  • We advise reserving 2 to 4 months ahead.

At 400 a day, there is no slack to absorb late requests. It is the first thing to sell out, in every season. If you reach Aguas Calientes without a permit, do not expect to find one.

Two practical points:

  • The permit and your main entry both have assigned times. They must fit together, so confirm the pair before you book either.
  • The climb is demanding. Machu Picchu is at 2,430 m (7,972 ft), and the path is steep. Decide whether it suits you before you spend a slot on it.

What to do if your date is gone

If the date you wanted is sold out, you still have options. Work through them in this order.

  1. Move the date by a day or two. A shift of one day often reopens availability, especially outside festival dates.
  2. Change the time or the circuit. Flexibility on the hour or the route widens your choice.
  3. Change the season. If your trip allows it, the rainy season has more room. The crowds are very low, but expect rain and mist.
  4. Ask us. We check availability for your exact dates and tell you what is realistic before you commit to flights.
  5. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed slot on the day. If a seller cannot show you a ticket with your name and passport details, treat the promise with suspicion.

If you have two days and want a plan that does not rest on a last-minute purchase, our 2-day Machu Picchu tour from Cusco starts from $635 per person. We arrange the visit as part of the trip plan, and we confirm what is included in your quote.

Why a package removes this risk

A package removes the problem by fixing the date first and building everything else around it.

When you book a package with us:

  • Your entry is part of the plan. We arrange your Machu Picchu entry alongside the rest of the trip and confirm what your quote includes.
  • Your train is arranged. The Expedition class is included in our packages, and Vistadome is available as an upgrade.
  • Your transport is arranged. Ground transport is private for the whole tour, and pickup from your hotel or the airport is included.
  • Your guide is part of the plan. The guide is licensed, as the site requires, and the guided visit takes 2.5 hours.
  • Your passport details are checked early. The name on the ticket must match your passport exactly, and we ask for the details at booking, not at the gate.

The benefit is simple. You find out your date is secure before you fly, not on arrival.

This is also why a long itinerary is lower risk than it looks. On our 14-Day Peru Mystic Tour, the first visit to Machu Picchu is guided for 2.5 hours and the second is free, and both are planned from the start. For the idea behind two visits, read about it in our 2-day and longer routes, and ask us about availability, because the price is not published.

How far ahead to book instead

Use these windows as the minimum.

  • June to August: book three months ahead.
  • Huayna Picchu, any month: reserve 2 to 4 months ahead.
  • Shoulder months, April, May, September and October: book early. You will find more room than in July, but not unlimited room.
  • November to March: you have flexibility. Book once your dates are fixed, and book Christmas week earlier than the rest of the month.

For a full timeline, read when to book your Peru tour.

Do these things at the same time as your Machu Picchu booking:

  • Check your passport. Make sure it is valid for your trip, and that the name matches what you give us.
  • Book flights separately. Domestic and international flights are not included in any of our packages.
  • Take insurance. Travel insurance is recommended on every trip.

If you want a longer trip built around a fixed Machu Picchu date, the 4-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour starts from $960 per person and includes private ground transport and pickup from your hotel or the airport. Send us your dates, and we will tell you what is available.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Machu Picchu tickets on the day?
We would not rely on it. Entry is by assigned time, and between June and August we advise booking three months ahead. Slots are easier to find in the rainy season, but they are not guaranteed.

Can I get a Huayna Picchu permit last minute?
Effectively no. There are only 400 permits a day, in two groups, and they are the first thing to sell out. We advise reserving 2 to 4 months ahead.

What if Machu Picchu is sold out on my date?
Move your date by a day or two, change the time or circuit, or travel in a quieter season. Ask us to check availability for your exact dates before you commit to flights.

Do I need a guide even with a last-minute ticket?
Yes. A licensed guide has been mandatory at Machu Picchu since 2024. You also need your passport, with no photocopies, and the name on your ticket must match it exactly.
