February is the hardest month of the year to see Vinicunca. It carries the highest risk of snow and rain, and many operators advise against booking this tour now. If the colours are the reason you are going, we recommend choosing another month. If you are in Cusco in February and still want to go, you can, but expect a white, wet and difficult day at 5,036 m.
We run this tour from Cusco, and we would rather tell you this than sell you a day that disappoints. The full route and logistics are in our complete Rainbow Mountain guide. For the overall seasonal picture, see the best time to visit Rainbow Mountain. This article covers what is specific to February.
Rainbow Mountain in February: the honest picture
February sits inside our rainy season, which runs from November/December to March/April. Within that season, it is the worst stretch for the mountain. January brings the gamble. February brings the peak of it.
Our summary for February:
- Colours: frequently hidden
- Snow and rain risk: the highest of the year
- Trail: in very poor condition
- Crowds: thin
- Our view: only for travellers who cannot move their dates
Vinicunca is 1,637 m higher than Cusco at 3,399 m. When the valley is soaked for weeks, the mountain above it is often under fresh snow. That is why this month is a poor bet for the classic view.

Snow and cloud risk this month
By February the rains have been building for weeks. Snow and rain can fall on the same day, and cloud can sit on the ridge for hours.
A fall of fresh snow covers the coloured bands. A heavy fall hides them completely. We do not publish percentages because they would be invented. The pattern, though, is the most unfavourable of the year.
Early starts help in other months because clearer air is more likely before cloud builds. In February that advantage is smaller. Even a very early arrival may find the summit in cloud. The exact pickup time is confirmed when you book. We explain the snow effect in detail in is there snow at Rainbow Mountain.
Trail conditions and underfoot
This is where February stands apart. After weeks of rain, the ground has no chance to dry. The route can become heavy mud, with standing water and slippery stretches. Snow on top makes it worse.
| Condition | What to expect in February |
|---|---|
| Ground | Deep mud and soaked soil |
| Snow | Likely on the upper slopes |
| Visibility | Often reduced by cloud or falling snow |
| Pace | Slow, with careful footing |
| Effort | Higher than the same hike in dry months |
A slip at altitude costs more than a slip in the valley. Your balance and energy are already stretched. Waterproof boots with real grip, a rain shell and a spare pair of dry socks are essential, not optional.
The altitude demands are the same in every month. Do not use this as your first big day at height, and read acclimatization before Rainbow Mountain before you plan it.
Temperature at the trailhead and at the summit
We do not give exact temperatures because they change daily. We can describe how February feels.
The start is cold and damp. Wet air gets into gloves and boots. At the top, wind and wet snow make it feel colder still. You are standing in a cold, saturated landscape, and standing still gets uncomfortable fast.
Dress in layers you can adjust:
- A warm base layer
- An insulating mid layer
- A fully waterproof outer shell and trousers
- Gloves, a hat and dry spares in a sealed bag
In February, waterproofing matters more than warmth alone. Wet clothing at 5,036 m is the real danger, so keep a dry layer in reserve.

Crowds this month
Crowds are very low. The rainy season is quieter, and February is one of its quietest months. If you do get a clear window, you may have the viewpoint nearly to yourself.
That is a real advantage, but it comes from the same weather that makes the trip hard. Fewer visitors usually means fewer people willing to face the conditions. For a contrast, see Rainbow Mountain in July, when the same viewpoint can be crowded.
Red Valley and Palccoyo in this month’s conditions
Red Valley and Palccoyo are alternatives people ask about. We do not run tours to either at the moment, so we cannot sell them here.
Do not assume they avoid February weather. They are in the same high region, so the same rain, snow and cloud can reach them. A gentler site can still be wet, muddy and hidden by cloud. Check recent conditions with whoever you book through.
For the differences between the two main options, read Vinicunca vs Palccoyo. If you want a Palccoyo day, ask us about a custom itinerary.
Should you go this month or choose another?
We suggest you choose another month if any of these apply:
- The colours are the main reason for your trip.
- Your dates are flexible by even a few weeks.
- You dislike mud, cold or wet clothing.
You might still go in February if all of these apply:
- You are in Cusco this month and cannot move.
- You accept that the mountain may be white or hidden.
- You are comfortable in hard conditions and have the right gear.
If you can shift your dates, May, June and July are our clearest months. The shoulder months either side of February are the next best option. Read Rainbow Mountain in January for the month before, and Rainbow Mountain in March for the month after.
If you are planning a wider trip, Peru in February and Machu Picchu in February explain how the rest of the country behaves this month. Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 m, 969 m below Cusco, so it is a very different experience from the mountain.
If you still want to go, our 1-day Rainbow Mountain tour is how we run it. Write to info@peruandesdiscovery.com or call +51 984 384 536 and we will tell you what recent departures have found, and whether we would go.
If you would rather take a day that does not depend on the colour of a slope, the Humantay Lake day tour starts from $127 per person. It is also high ground, so weather can affect it too. Check conditions before you commit.
We advise travel insurance on every trip. If you have a health condition, speak to a doctor before going above 5,000 m.
