Yes, you can do both in one week. The order is what makes it work. Spend your first days in Cusco at 3,399 m, visit Machu Picchu at 2,430 m in the middle, and keep Rainbow Mountain at 5,036 m for later, after a recovery day. Reverse that order and you risk spending your most expensive days feeling unwell.
We run both trips from Cusco, and the combination is the most common request we get. Our complete Rainbow Mountain guide covers the hike itself. This article covers how to fit it around Machu Picchu.
Can you do both in one week? Yes, with the right order
A week is enough if you stay in the Cusco region and do not add other destinations. Seven days gives you room for arrival, acclimatization, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, a recovery day and the mountain.
Here is what a week cannot hold. It cannot hold Rainbow Mountain on day one or two. It cannot hold Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain on back-to-back days. And it cannot hold a long list of extras. Each of those compresses the recovery time your body needs.
Flights are not included in any of our packages, so you choose your own dates and airline. The Lima–Cusco flight takes about 1 h 20 min on LATAM, Sky or JetSmart. A morning arrival gives you the most usable first day.

Why Rainbow Mountain must never come first
Cusco sits at 3,399 m. Vinicunca sits at 5,036 m, which is 1,637 m higher. If you land from sea level and go straight up, your body has had no time to adjust, and fitness will not protect you. We explain this in detail in acclimatization before Rainbow Mountain.
The tour also leaves in the dark, very early in the morning. We confirm the exact pickup time when you book. Starting a pre-dawn day on your first night at altitude is a bad combination.
Do not use Rainbow Mountain as your acclimatization day. Use the days before it for that purpose, and keep it as the highest point of your week.

A week that works, day by day
This is a sample sequence, not a fixed package. Exact stops vary by itinerary, and we confirm the details at booking.
| Day | Plan | Approx. altitude |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Cusco, rest, walk slowly | 3,399 m |
| 2 | Easy Cusco day, no long hikes | 3,399 m |
| 3 | Sacred Valley, then on to Ollantaytambo | approx. 2,800 m |
| 4 | Train to Aguas Calientes, guided Machu Picchu visit | 2,430 m |
| 5 | Return to Cusco and recover | 3,399 m |
| 6 | Rainbow Mountain | up to 5,036 m |
| 7 | Slow morning, then departure or a gentle Cusco day | 3,399 m |
The Machu Picchu leg uses the logistics we run on every trip. Cusco to Ollantaytambo is 1.5 hours by private vehicle. The Expedition train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes takes 1 h 40 min. The CONSETTUR bus from Aguas Calientes to the site takes 30 minutes and leaves every 10 minutes. The guided tour takes 2.5 hours.
Two rules apply on day 4. A licensed guide has been mandatory at Machu Picchu since 2024. And you must carry your original passport, because photocopies are not accepted and the name on your ticket must match it exactly.

The recovery day most itineraries skip
Day 5 in the table is the one people cut when they are short of time. Please do not cut it.
By day 5 you will have done an early train, a long guided walk on stone steps and a return journey. Rainbow Mountain the next morning means another pre-dawn start. A recovery day between the two protects the hike, and it protects your enjoyment of it.
Use the day for a slow breakfast, a short walk in Cusco and an early night. Drink water, eat lightly and avoid alcohol. You will feel the difference the next morning.

Altitude sequencing: 3,399 to 2,430 to 5,036 m
The three altitudes are the reason for the order. Here they are side by side.
| Place | Altitude | Role in your week |
|---|---|---|
| Cusco | 3,399 m (11,152 ft) | Base for acclimatization |
| Sacred Valley | approx. 2,800 m | Lower, gentler step |
| Machu Picchu | 2,430 m (7,972 ft) | Lowest point of the week |
| Vinicunca | 5,036 m | Highest point, kept for later |
Machu Picchu is 969 m lower than Cusco. That makes it a comfortable midpoint. Many travellers feel better at the citadel than in the city, and sleeping lower in Aguas Calientes helps too.
Put the lowest site in the middle and the highest site after you have spent several days at 3,399 m. That sequence lets your body adjust before the demanding day.
Remember that even Machu Picchu has hazards. Stairs, sun and dehydration still tire you out. We do not give medical advice, so speak to a doctor before travelling if you have a health condition.
Booking them together vs separately
You can book each piece on its own. The risk is in the gaps between them.
When you book separately, you manage the sequence yourself. You also manage the transfers, the guide for Machu Picchu and your ticket timing. A mistake on one piece can disrupt the others.
Timing matters most for Machu Picchu. It opens at 6:00 AM and closes at 5:30 PM, and entry is by assigned time slot. We recommend booking three months ahead for June to August. Huayna Picchu has 400 permits a day in two groups, and you should reserve two to four months ahead.
If you only want the mountain, our 1-day Rainbow Mountain tour works as a standalone day. Just place it correctly in your week.
Weather also decides which dates make sense. Our dry season runs from April/May to October/November, and May, June and July are the clearest months. The rainy season runs from November/December to March/April.
What we build into our packages
In our multi-day packages, we plan the order for you. Hotels are 3-star, or 3-4 star depending on the package. Land transport is private throughout, and pickup and transfers from your hotel or the airport are included. The 6-, 7- and 8-day packages include a private professional guide, and groups start from 2 people.
Prices start from $1,420 per person for the 6-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour. It is a good fit if you have less time and want the sequence kept simple.
If you want more room to breathe, the 8-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour starts from $2,050 per person. The extra days are what make a recovery day and a safe sequence possible.
To add Rainbow Mountain to either package, contact us and we will confirm how it fits. Trying to decide how long you need overall? Read how many days you need in Peru.
Flights and international tickets are not included, and travel insurance is recommended. You can pay by PayPal, Izipay or WeTravel.
FAQs (FAQPage schema)
Can I do Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu in one week?
Yes. Spend the first days in Cusco, visit Machu Picchu in the middle, take a recovery day and do Rainbow Mountain afterwards.
Which should I do first, Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain?
Machu Picchu first. It sits at 2,430 m, while Rainbow Mountain is at 5,036 m and needs more acclimatization.
Can I do both on consecutive days?
We advise against it. Machu Picchu is a long day, and Rainbow Mountain starts in the dark the next morning. Add a recovery day between them.
Should I book them together or separately?
Either works, but a combined package keeps the order, transfers and guide organised for you. Confirm what your package includes at booking.
