The Inca Bridge Q’eswachaka and the 4 Lagoons

Experience one of the most unique day trips from Cusco with this Q’eswachaka Bridge & 4 Lagoons Tour, a full-day adventure combining living Inca heritage and breathtaking Andean landscapes. Departing at 5:00 AM, you’ll journey south through traditional highland communities to the Q’eswachaka Bridge — the last surviving handwoven Inca suspension bridge, rebuilt annually using ancestral techniques and stretching 28 meters above the Apurímac River. Crossing it is an exhilarating and deeply cultural experience unlike anything else in Peru.

After a traditional lunch in Yanaoca, the tour continues to the stunning Circuit of the Four Lagoons — Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia, and Pomacanchi — where peaceful highland scenery, local wildlife, and Andean flora create a serene finale to the day. With private transport, a bilingual guide, breakfast, lunch, and all entrance fees included from $157 USD per person, this is a truly off-the-beaten-path experience perfect for travelers seeking adventure and authentic Andean culture beyond the typical tourist routes. You’ll be back in Cusco by around 5:00 PM.

Overview

The Q'eswachaka Bridge & 4 Lagoons tour is one of the most extraordinary day trips available from Cusco — a journey that takes you to a living piece of Inca engineering that has survived more than 600 years through an unbroken chain of community dedication, and then continues through some of the most serene and rarely visited highland landscapes in the entire Cusco region. This is a tour for travelers who want the unexpected: an ancient bridge still maintained by hand, four remote lagoons teeming with Andean wildlife, and a route that passes through authentic communities far removed from the standard tourist circuit.

Key Tour Highlights & Itinerary

  • Circuit of the 4 Lagoons – Tour the high-altitude wetlands encompassing Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia, and Pomacanchi Lagoons. Observe migratory waterfowl, native flora, and rural lakeside communities before the 2-hour drive back to Cusco, arriving around 5:00 PM.

Itinerary

Day 1: The Inca Bridge Q’eswachaka and the 4 Lagoons

We will pick you up early from the hotel around 5:00 a.m., we will begin the journey in our tourist transport, traveling through some districts of Cusco city heading south.

Our first stop will be Rumi Punku, which was one of the main entry points to Cusco during the Inca era for Rumi Punku travelers coming from the Qollasuyo region.

After an hour of travel, we will stop at the Combapata viewpoint. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes Combapata viewpoint and, above all, see the confluence of the Salcca River with the Vilcanota River and the famous sacred river of the Incas.

We will continue our journey to Yanaoca. The district of Yanaoca is one of the eight districts in the province of Yanaoca. Canas, Cusco department.

Next, we will continue our tour for another 30 minutes and reach the Q’iwe District, where the last Inca bridge, “Q’eswachaka”, is located, built with plant fibers and 28.67 meters long.

After getting the first views of the Inca Bridge, we will begin to descend the steps before reaching the bridge itself. There, we will have time to explore and cross the Q’eswachaka Inca bridge. After feeling the adrenaline and crossing the bridge, our guide will begin explaining the construction and maintenance process.

After the visit, we will return to Yanaoca where we will enjoy our lunch. After lunch, we will continue our tour and visit the Circuit of the 4 Lagoons: Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia, and Pomacanchi. Here we can enjoy a lot of regional flora and fauna while experiencing rich Andean culture along the way.

  • Group Size: 2 and up.
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate.

Tour Duration

This is a full-day experience lasting approximately 12 hours. Hotel pickup begins at 5:00 AM and the return to Cusco is expected at around 5:00 PM. The very early departure is necessary given the distance to Q'eswachaka and the time needed to visit the bridge, enjoy lunch, and complete the full circuit of four lagoons before dark.

Departure & Return Time

Pickup from your hotel begins at 5:00 AM. The early start allows the tour to reach Q'eswachaka at a comfortable morning hour, with plenty of time for the bridge visit before lunch. The return drive from the lagoon circuit takes approximately two hours, with arrival back in Cusco at around 5:00 PM. We recommend having a light snack or drink ready at your hotel the evening before, as departure is before most hotel breakfasts are served — though the tour includes a breakfast stop en route.

Pick-Up & Drop-Off

Private hotel pickup and drop-off are included for accommodations within the Cusco city center. Our driver will meet you at your hotel entrance at 5:00 AM. Please confirm your hotel name and full address when booking so we can coordinate the pickup accurately.

Difficulty Level

This tour is rated easy to moderate. The majority of the day is spent traveling by private vehicle through spectacular Andean landscapes, with short walks at each stop along the way. The only section that may feel physically or emotionally demanding is crossing the Q'eswachaka Bridge itself — which sways gently underfoot and hangs above the Apurímac River gorge. Travelers who prefer not to cross the bridge can observe it and take photographs from the viewing platform on the riverbank. No hiking experience or elevated fitness level is required.

Altitude & Acclimatization

The tour reaches a maximum altitude of approximately 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) at certain points along the route. If you have recently arrived in Cusco, spending at least one night acclimatizing before this tour is strongly recommended. The vehicle carries a first aid kit and emergency oxygen as a standard precaution. Staying well hydrated throughout the day is important, especially at the higher sections of the route.

What Is Included

The tour includes private transportation from and to your hotel in Cusco, a private professional guide, breakfast, lunch in Yanaoca, all entrance tickets for Q'eswachaka Bridge and the Four Lagoons Circuit, a first aid kit, and all necessary amenities for the journey. Dinner is not included upon return to Cusco.

Best Time to Visit

The tour operates year-round, but the dry season from April through October offers the most reliable conditions — clear skies, excellent visibility at the viewpoints and lagoons, and the most comfortable temperatures for walking. The wet season from November through March is still possible but can bring muddy conditions and reduced visibility. The most special time to visit Q'eswachaka is in June, when the annual communal bridge renewal ceremony takes place — a three-day event of extraordinary cultural significance that is open to respectful visitors.

Frecuendly asked questions

Q’eswachaka is the last remaining handwoven Inca rope bridge in the world, stretching 28.67 meters across the Apurímac River gorge in the province of Canas, south of Cusco. It is woven entirely from qoya grass fibers and rebuilt from scratch every year by the four surrounding Quechua communities in a three-day communal ceremony that has continued uninterrupted for over six centuries. UNESCO inscribed this annual renewal ritual on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013, recognizing it as one of the most important living expressions of Inca culture still practiced today.

Yes, the bridge is completely safe to cross. It is inspected and fully renewed each year by the local communities using the same ancestral fiber-weaving techniques passed down for generations. The renewal process ensures the bridge is in excellent structural condition. Your guide will brief you on how to cross safely before you step onto it. Travelers who feel uncomfortable crossing due to vertigo or a fear of heights are welcome to observe and photograph the bridge from the viewing platform on the bank.

Hotel pickup begins at 5:00 AM and the return to Cusco is expected at approximately 5:00 PM, making this a full 12-hour day. The early departure is necessary to cover the distance to Q’eswachaka and complete the Four Lagoons Circuit comfortably before nightfall.

Yes. Breakfast is included en route before arriving at the bridge, and lunch is served in the traditional district of Yanaoca after the Q’eswachaka visit and before continuing to the lagoons. Dinner is not included upon return to Cusco.

The Four Lagoons Circuit comprises Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia, and Pomacanchi — a series of high-altitude highland lakes in the southern Cusco region, each with its own distinct character and scenery. The area is rich in Andean flora and birdlife, with species such as Andean gulls, ducks, ibis, and flamingos commonly spotted depending on the season. The landscapes are vast, tranquil, and largely free of other tourists, making this one of the most peaceful parts of the entire tour.

The Q’eswachaka Bridge does sway gently when crossed and is suspended above a river gorge, which can be unsettling for travelers with vertigo or a strong fear of heights. However, crossing the bridge is entirely optional — those who prefer not to cross can watch from the observation platform on the bank and still have a full experience of seeing and photographing the bridge up close. The rest of the tour involves no heights or exposed terrain.

Rumi Punku — meaning “stone door” in Quechua — was one of the principal entry points into Cusco from the Qollasuyo region during the Inca era. It is a brief but historically meaningful stop that sets the context for the journey south, offering a tangible connection to the road networks that once linked every corner of the Inca Empire to its capital.

The tour is rated easy to moderate. Most of the day is spent in private transport, and the walking at each stop is light and on relatively flat terrain. The bridge crossing itself is short but emotionally engaging. No special fitness level or trekking experience is required, though the high altitude means staying hydrated and taking it slowly is always important.

Yes. Every June, the four communities surrounding the bridge gather for a three-day communal renewal ceremony in which the entire bridge is unwoven and rewoven from scratch using freshly harvested qoya grass. This event — known locally as the Qocha Raymi — is one of the most extraordinary living cultural rituals in the Andes and is open to respectful visitors. If your travel dates fall in June, we strongly recommend timing your visit to coincide with this ceremony. Contact us for availability during that period.

We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance to confirm your spot, coordinate the early hotel pickup, and prepare the necessary entrance tickets and meals. During peak season from June through August — and especially around the annual bridge renewal ceremony in June — booking well ahead is essential as availability is limited.

Gran guía y muy profesionales. La agencia es súper formal. Totalmente recomendable. Fuimos mi pareja y yo solos, súper puntuales.

Urubamba Roadtrip Visiting the Sacred Valley is a must do of a Peru trip, and a private tour is the best way to do it. We had a great guide who took us to places we would never have found by ourselves. Private tours are of course more expensive, but it does really add something to be able to go wherever without adjusting for someone else’s schedule. It is a full day experience, which is enough for half a dozen stops. Recommended!

Great tour with a great knowledgeable guide Great experience with Alfredo covering the sacred valley across ollayantambo, sun temple, guinea pig temple, the town of ollantaytambo and its streets, the morey and the salt mines. He’s very knowledgeable and we learned a lot of about the inka civilization. He also organized a very nice lunch buffet at a beautiful venue which was a very pleasant experience, also giving us the opportunities to pet some alpacas! He was also great with taking our pictures in all the spots! This was a great introductory tour for us as we kick off our Cusco and machu pichu trip

Best tour agency in Peru!! Peru Andes Discovery made my whole Machu Picchu trip into the perfect vacation! Only thing I had to worry about was the weather at Machu Picchu! Arnold took care of all the planning and logistics that made the trip a real vacation for me! Even as we had a small misfortune with getting the tickets as the government changed ticket sale policies, Arnold and his team made the whole process stress free and did the best to make our experience amazing despite the one extra day in Aguas Calientes. William was an amazing driver who got made the car rides as smooth and comfortable as possible! Alfredo our tour guide was super knowledgeable and spoke so well and you could feel his love and appreciation for the history and culture of Machu Picchu. His gave detailed explanations of all the structures and the historical context of the city. He was a great friend to show us around the old city! His photography skills are also so impressive and gave us the best photos and videos!! I recommend him for everyone visiting Machu Picchu!! Overall our amazing experience in Peru was made possible by the helpful people at Peru Andes Discovery! Again a very big thank you to Arnold, William, and Alfredo as our trip would not have been enjoyable without them!

Great Tour Company and an Amazing Guide Originally booked a private tour of Sacred Valley for 4 people (2 couples). They reached out to us and offered free airport transfer which we gladly accepted. They also mentioned they do private tours of Rainbow Mountainand offered a discount. I accepted that too as it was cheaper than another non-private tours I had booked. We had Angela as a guide and she was great! Very informative and taught us so much. Would highly recommend this tour company.

Originally booked a private tour for 4 people (2 couples) for the Sacred Valley. They messaged me that they would provide free airport transfer which we gladly accepted. They also gave a list of other tours they offered. I asked about Rainbow Mountain and their price for a private tour was cheaper than what I had booked with another couple. So I booked that with them too. We had Angela as a guide for both tours and she was amazing. She was very informative and seemed to really care about her country’s history and environment. When hiking Rainbow Mountain, she made sure to always check on us and make sure we were okay. The rides were timely and safe and I would highly recommend this company!
