Itinerary

Begin your journey from Cusco, a city brimming with colonial charm and Inca history. Board a comfortable vehicle and set off towards the Sacred Valley. The early start ensures you make the most of your day, allowing ample time to explore multiple sites.

Arrive in Pisac, a town renowned for its bustling market and impressive archaeological site. Start with a visit to the vibrant market, where you can browse through stalls filled with handcrafted goods, traditional textiles, and fresh local produce. Engage with local artisans and perhaps pick up a unique souvenir. After exploring the market, head to the nearby archaeological site. The Pisac ruins feature extensive agricultural terraces, well-preserved temples, and intricate stonework, offering insight into the ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

Next, journey to the Chinchero Plateau, home to the historical town of Chinchero. This town is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow and is rich in Inca heritage. Visit the main plaza, where you’ll find an impressive stone wall adorned with ten trapezoidal niches. Explore the colonial church built on Inca foundations, and enjoy panoramic views of the Sacred Valley, with the Cordillera Urubamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay gracing the horizon. Learn about Chinchero’s cultural significance and its role in Inca history.

Continue your adventure with a visit to the salt mines of Maras. These ancient salt pans have been in use since pre-Inca times and are still operational today. Marvel at the sight of over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside, forming a spectacular mosaic of white terraces. Learn about the traditional methods of salt extraction and the importance of salt in Andean culture. The unique landscape provides excellent photo opportunities.

Head to Moray, a fascinating archaeological site featuring concentric circular terraces. These terraces are believed to have been used by the Incas as an agricultural research center, allowing them to study and experiment with crop cultivation at different altitudes. Walk through the site and appreciate the ingenuity of Inca engineering. The terraces create a stunning visual effect, resembling a giant amphitheater set against the backdrop of the Andean mountains.

After lunch, travel to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. This ancient Inca fortress features massive stone terraces built into the mountainside and offers a glimpse into the strategic military and ceremonial functions of the site. Explore the well-preserved ruins, including the Temple of the Sun and the Princess Baths. Learn about the historical significance of Ollantaytambo, which served as both a royal estate and a defensive stronghold during the Inca resistance against Spanish conquest.

You have the option to either return to Cusco or continue your journey to Aguas Calientes. If you choose to continue, take a scenic train ride from the Ollantaytambo station to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Urubamba River and the surrounding mountains as you journey through the Andean landscape. Arriving in Aguas Calientes, you’ll be ready for the next day’s adventure to the iconic Machu Picchu. This charming town offers a range of accommodations, dining options, and hot springs to unwind after a day of exploration.
